    Hi all,

So my 1794 Tundra (regular chrome mirrors, not tow mirrors) has whistling wind noise coming from the side mirrors area wherever I'm driving on a highway 50mph or faster.

If I close the mirrors, the whistling stops. Open mirrors to normal position, whistling begins once again.

I took truck to the dealer service, and they, confirmed that it does indeed make whistling sound on highway, and the sound stops when mirrors are closed, just like I described to them, but they're not sure if anything can be done about it as truck is very new and they don't have a solution for this issue.

They kept it for one more day in service to have their shop Forman test drive it to hear the noise and see if they may have any solution.

My guess is that the whistling sound is coming from the side mirrors area as maybe there's some sort of a gap or maybe bad seal that picks up wind and makes whistling sound.

If dealer tells me they can't do anything about it, what else can I ask dealer to do?

Can they inquire with Toyota engineers about it?

    Whats the escalation path?

    Thx!

I had this problem to. There's quite a few other threads on it as well. But unfortunately no one could come to a concensus on where the sound was coming from. Some thought it was a door seal near the mirror, some said the seal around the window. I got it to go away after I put electrical tape around all the gaps in the plastic around the mirror itself. I unsealed them one by one until the whistle came back. Mine.was from two small holes under the mirror caps. I suspect.theyre for drainage.

You will need to keep pressing the dealer. Others have had this as well as wind noise from window seals on the 2022. Review the various threads in the 3rd gen forum- check the threads about rattles, window seals, mirrors, etc. First year model issues.

I did study this thread already... Just didn't see any solution for the noise from mirrors

Do I ask dealer to open a case with Toyota about this issue? What's the escalation path?

    Thx

All the models have been doing that since 2007. If they haven't cured it by now, they never will.

Yes, keep on your dealer and Toyota. Some had mirrors replaced, window weatherstrip, etc.

and check post 23 here, the 2023s have a change from the 2022s for the wind noise/windows

I have a 22 and I can confirm after the first 25 miles the noise shows up and is persistent. Somehow it managed to stay quite while test driving. Guess I never drove it 50 mph during the test drive.

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
It's a Feature on a '15 Sequandra too. Though it usually takes 2 things to make it occur (only on driver's side as best I can tell). 1) 70-75+mph travel speed And 2) a moderate (15+ mph) crosswind - from 2 o'clock to 8 o'clock type angle.

Guess they didn't test that scenario...

Just got back from the dealership service.

They don't have any solution for the mirror that's causing whistling noise above 50mph. They did confirm the noise.

They said they can replace the mirrors but don't know if the new mirror is exactly the same as old one and if it will fix issue or not.

So they don't have a solution and told me to go home and monitor

Did anyone had mirrors replaced, and did that resolve the problem?

My driver side mirror stared whistling within 2 weeks of getting the truck. I took it to the dealer and they got a new mirror on order. I had to wait about 2 months for it to arrive but the whistling has never returned. It’s been probably 3 months or so since they replaced it.

If it is a passenger widow do you think window visors will deflect the noise?

In my case, noise is from the mirrors.

I close mirrors on the highway, whistling noise stops. Open mirrors, noise comes back. Visors won't help.

Hello. I'm new here, but wanted to say I have the same problem on my 2023 Tundra Limited. Whistling stops when driver's mirror is folded in. It kicks in at exactly 50mph or higher.

It seems silly to have to replace the mirrors for this problem. I noticed the problem on a 2023 SR as well, when test driving. I have not pursued it with the dealer yet, as I just got the truck a few days ago.

It may be silly to replace the mirror but would you rather have the whistling or a new mirror? For me, on a 60k truck, the whistling was not acceptable.

Replacing mirror is not a big deal.

The problem is that there are one or two people here who said that replacing mirror did not solve their mirror whistling issue.

However, I think that there's also one person who posted saying that mirror replacement did solve the whistling problem.

I haven't pressed my dealership on this issue yet but may try to insist on them to replace the mirror anyway to see if whistling will be resolved.

Dealer says that the replacement mirror part number is the same as original one, so they don't believe that this is the solution..

kap1 - keep us updated. My 2023 has a terrible whistle at 70mph. Sounds like the driver's mirror.

I'll do more testing when I have time.

Try to buy some masking tape and keep taping out any seams, holes around the mirrors and also try around the trim and weatherstripping. Do it little by little until you find which area causes the noise...

OK - So I made lots of headway today. I drove the truck with all seams taped up, and of course the mirror was perfectly quiet. Then I removed the masking tape - and the whistling was horrible.

Then I cut a 4x4" piece of black t-shirt, folded it in half, then shoved the fabric in the curved joint between the mirror and the stationary mount. I packed it in there good with a thin flathead screwdriver. Noise is gone. No whistle at 60mph, no whistle at 80mph. Gone.

That's a good idea to put tshirt in there. I will try to confirm that as well when on freeway next time.

Any idea on a fix though? As mirror opens closes frequently and cloth will come off eventually

This is an awesome find jeffcoseo !

It's probably the precise size and shape of that gap that is resonant (whistles). A small change to the shape will probably kill the whistle. Especially if you block off the middle of it.

I'm thinking a stick on rubber bumper in the gap that doesn't interfere with the mechanical motion has a chance.

    Just a thought

Mine has a faint whistle on the drivers side mirror as well. I wonder if insead of jamming something in the entire seem if you just blocked the front would it stop the whistle. Also i wonder if we opened up the leading edge of the gap ever so slightly. by trimming back the leading edge of the inner side of the seem, would stop the whistle.

All of these are possibilities AWDdude.

Like I said above, most likely even a small size or shape change will stop it.

And this may explain why some trucks have the whistling and others don't. Just the way the mirror base parts fit together, wide gap maybe, and that creates the whistle....as in a whistle one Barney Fife would have less the pea ;)

I suspect the fix is very simple.

I don't have power fold-in mirrors. Mine are just the cheap plastic fold-in style. I don't think I would ever fold them in purposefully. I may keep the black t-shirt in there and run a quick bead of black caulk on the seam. The difference between Whistle and No Whistle on my truck is deafening, unmistakeable, howling.

It probably came down to manufacturing tolerance. What's funny - the horizontal seam on that mirror has a small rubber gasket to stop wind and rain from pushing through. But the vertical seam is wide open with no effort to slow air movement.
