Remote start and drive off possible?

Hey all, first post, long time lurker.
After contemplating the last 5.7 V8 vs the new V6 over the last few months, I finally purchased a 2024 SR5 with the TRD sport premium package a few days ago.
On past vehicles, I have had a 2005 SR5 tundra crew cab, and currently have a 2010 SR Tundra crew cab(4.6), my previous every day use , and a 2008 SR5 sequoia that the wife has done a wonderful job of taking care of.
I am getting used to the new features in the 2024, there have been many changes in 14 years One of the features that piqued my interest was the remote start capability. I have the month long app preview, so that's a thing, but really more interested in the key fob remote start.
Either from the fob or app, it seems that the vehicle will shut down as soon as I open the door. I have searched Toyota and not received anything that explains how to disable this, only that it is possible on some vehicles after 2023; the "remote start and drive-off" that I referred to.
It is referred to as a safety feature by Toyota, but I find this more as an inconvenience.
Has it been identified how to disable the stop engine function after the vehicle has been remote started?
    Thanks, pics to follow.

It's a common complaint with no resolve that I'm aware of. I suspect it would require a software update by Toyota, which isn't likely to happen.

This has always been a horrible drawback on our trucks. I hate it just as much today as when my 2020 was brand new. Makes the remote start pretty much useless for all but warming up the truck in the coldest of temperatures (which we really don’t get here). I just can’t stand having to re-crank it every time. Seems wasteful and just asinine.

That said, a year or two ago, Toyota said they were going to fix it going forward. Has that not happened yet?? Are the new trucks still shipping with the shutoff BS???

Yes the new trucks are the same. Here's Toyota's official statement on it:

"To help ensure your safety, and anyone near the vehicle, the remote engine starter is designed to shut the engine off when it detects any attempt to enter or move the vehicle after a remote engine start."

Was afraid of that. If that is the case, then I'll just have to add myself to the group hoping that this gets an update.

So far, have been enjoying the new ride otherwise. Love the twin turbo. Very smooth and great pickup!

If you are walking towards your truck, start it, then notice someone sketchy approaching you that's not improving safety if it shuts down the second you open the door.

If they are concerned about someone driving off/stealing the truck before you get to it or while it is warming up - make it so that it won't leave park without the keyfob in the truck. Although - isn't it locked anyway until you touch the door handle?

Failing to see their thought process here..

It's more a result of Toyota being unable to figure it out, then trying to hide it by calling it a "safety feature." Other manufacturers' remote start systems have had keyless takeover/anti-theft capabilities for many years. I installed a Viper remote start in 2003 that did it. Many manufacturers build it into the cars now. It's very simple. The owner should be able to start the vehicle remotely and keep it running until the key is present, whether that be inserted into the ignition or present in the vehicle. That's how you do remote start. Toyota's version in the Tundras is a complete joke.

I agree. It's a terribly inconvenient drawback to have to get in the truck and push that start button. I could break a fingernail doing that. I'm thinking about trading it in for an older sequoia.

    :notsure:

How does that make any sense? Keep it running until the key is present? So someone can take your truck as long as the key is not present.

He's referring to the key being present in order to make the "hand-shake" with the security module. Once in the truck, you place your foot on the brake and the module initializes. Then you can shift into drive or reverse without the vehicle shutting down.

At least this is how its works with the Accessorides setup. I've have it installed since August of 22 and haven't had any issues so far. I opted for the 4G antenna and it cost a whopping $99 for 3 years of service, first year included with purchase. Way less expensive than Toyota's, and from my experience it is much more reliable. You can also use the long range remotes like @eddiefromcali mentioned. I had them on a previous SUV and the range is excellent. Lots of options to choose from.

100% worth it and one of the best mods I've done to the truck.

Correct. In order to drive the truck away, the key must be present. With my old remote start system, if you touched the brake to put it in gear without the key inserted, it would die. In most cars now, you just can’t shift it into gear until you have the key and push the start button.

My wife has a 2024 Grand Highlander and it does not shut off when the door is opened after remote start.

I remote started our truck via the Toyota app while still on the train to my work parking lot. As expected, when I got to the truck and opened the tailgate with the key fob to load my work bags, it shut off.

Ford figured it out years ago, and it’s not rocket science. My 2018 F150 would remote start. As with all cars, it has to be locked first, so nobody’s going to open your door and drive off. Then, when you unlock the door and get in, the truck is still “off” with the engine running. You push the start vehicle button to turn it “on”. At no point do you have to restart it. And they also set the HVAC, heated/cooled seats, etc. automatically with the remote start based on outside air temp. A middle school kid could program that. I’m not sure how Toyota thinks the way they implemented it increases safety. If someone wants to hit you over the head and take your keys and drive off, turning off the remotely started engine does diddley squat.

Another disappointment for Toyota. Total BS that they cannot get this feature working on 3rd Gen Tundras. It’s software issue and Toyota refuses to support past consumers. Toyota just wants their customers to keep swapping out vehicles to get basic features that every other car manufacturer supports. I cannot believe that the largest car manufacturer in the world does this to their customers. Their responses to recalls is dismal. Turbos, gas line, bed cover, rear axle bolts, parking break, totally unacceptable for a car manufacturer. I came back to Toyota in 2022 with the Tundra, probably going back to Honda or other for my next purchase. I originally left them due to nickel and dime their customers for accessories, like A/C, radio, etc. Now their quality is definitely in question. Sorry, got on a role here.

Funny you mention software update with no support. You are 100% correct when it comes to providing support to benefit the consumer. I do my own maint on my truck, oil changes, etc. Truck hasn’t been at dealer for over a year now, don’t trust them to do simple services. Anyway, I keep getting an alert on my 14” infotainment screen asking me to allow a software update. I’m afraid to allow since Toyota wants us to pay subscription services and worried the update will take away key fob remote start feature. Do you have any thoughts on the software update, should I allow?

when i let the free year of remote start service expire, the remote start via fob still worked. just the app remote start didnt work. had to turn it back on since the wife doesnt have the luxury of being in range at work to remote start via the fob.

at home it worked just fine.

The software update does not eliminate the FOB remote start. Go ahead and let the update happen, it's just a bug fix.

Fucking Kia figured it out years ago. Start the car and you have 30 seconds to get the keyfob inside or it shuts off. No keyfob, no getting it out of park either. Toyota is so full of shit calling it a “safety feature”. Sorry im still so heated about this because it’s so illogical.
