Has anyone else noticed paint rubbing off the tailgate at the bottom corners of the plastic handle surround? Was washing today and noticed one side had worn through to the metal.

This new Tundra is an utter fucking failure on behalf of Toyota... Just my two cents after reading the forums lately!

Lmao, everyone that complains on this board about the new 3rd Gen seems to have forgotten how many problems the 2007 2nd Gen Tundra had. In a couple of years, these people will have nothing to say.

Trying to get back on topic. No one else has seen this? I’m 10k miles in. I’m going in for an oil change next week and will see what the dealership says.

Yes, I noticed it on my truck around 12k miles. It’s getting pretty bad now @ 19k and plan to bring it up @ 20k service, pretty disappointing.

Anytime I see a gen 3 in a parking lot while out, I check them, and they all have that same wear at the corners beginning.

@wedemmoez is Toyota aware of this issue and working on a fix to prevent the paint from being worn off?

I checked mine - black 2022 with about 35k km.

Lots of heavy construction use, poor roads, etc., but no wear on mine of any sort. The plastic surround is solid, with no movement at all.

I'm interested in what others are finding.

Do the trucks with paint problems at the tailgate have a cover or something else pushing down on the top tailgate trim?

I have a Diamondback cover and it is pushing down on the tailgate trim. I will have a look and see if mine is dong the same thing.

I concur. A complete mess of a truck. A lot of issues aren't 1st year model woes. The truck is junk. I've read enough and have formed my opinion. I'm constantly seeing used 22-23's pop up at my local dealers. Guess the buyers see the failures and get rid of them.

Just checked mine at 11k and it is starting to wear through the paint just like yours. Bummer, future rust and paint bubbling with Midwest salt. Mine is MBM. Hey Toyota you need to check this out, soon.

Nope and nope, nor would I ever want to own one at this point after reading about the NUMEROUS issues owners on here are having. I am quite content with my 2020 Tundra, which has been super reliable with no engine failures, paint chipping, plastic breaking, electrical problems etc!

Toyota is know for cheap paint. Granted in the spot it’s in the rubbing plays a big part. I washed and waxed my truck yesterday and the paint has a couple of tiny chips and some blemishes. I don’t pay attention anymore because it’s a losing battle. And don’t get me started on the white tundra I had. Huge paint failure on Toyota part.

    Too many, but not enough....
I disagree with this. Tesla is known for cheap paint. I actually asked numerous body places when I was hunting around for a PPF shop and they all said toyota has the best quality paint. When I got PPF installed at a very highly rated local shop that does alot of high end cars, they told me by far toyota has the best paint quality and that tesla was by far the worst. Even the older toyotas that I have owned have never had paint issues. The fords that my family has that are around the same year as the toyotas all have paint peeling or rusting issues. Just my real world experiences. I am pretty bad at washing and taking care of the exterior of cars in general because I hate doing it and on top of that they always live outside in so cal heat.

Granted the new tundras may be different but I dont have experience with those other than this forum.

Just checked my 2023 1794 with 1400 miles and it also has the same problem with the paint wear although at this point it’s barely noticeable. Gonna have to keep an eye on it.

As to other problems somebody says makes the truck junk, not mine. The only issue I have is the driver side rear door chrome trim rubs against the drivers door edge when the rear door is opened, sometimes. It’s chipped the paint on the front door edge but the dealer looked at it this morning and said either the chrome piece wasn’t installed correctly or it wasn’t built correctly and it must be happening to more than a few other Tundras since her parts ordering region has three other dealers also waiting on the part, it’s backordered. Very minor issue to me and over 40 years I’ve owned many other new cars, minivans, trucks, and motorcycles and none of them were perfect without something needing attention. Some were really bad, Chevrolet being the worst. All four of my new Toyota purchases were by far the best when it comes to factory issues. My 2007 Taco had a bad wheel bearing, and my wife’s 2020 Highlander had a paint blemish. That was it. So far, I love my Tundra and feel it was an excellent choice given all the other issues with domestic trucks I hear about!

Mine is black and I know black shows swirls and other stuff more. But I can completely remove everything, looks perfect, not too long later swirls. And I make sure to pre wash to get the most dirt I can off and use microfiber everything. I have just learned to live with it. I know my 06 Silverado SS in black was never this bad.
