I can take it. I volunteered the example, after all. Anyway, you weren't wrong.

Here's one for y'all. On the topic of Jeeps with 'ol @Tundra2 getting his...

Neighbor's MIL just passed. Left them a loaded AWD 2012 Grand Cherokee Laredo, low mile (~45k). Serviced at dealership regularly, in true old fart fashion.

They drove it down from mid/eastern NC, noticed nothing strange. He pinged me and was, like, "Now we got it here, I'm hearing this weird bumping noise when driving". I'm thinking he's talking about the engine bay. Thinking it's either knocking or vacuum/EVAP hose is loose. Has plenty of oil, starts and runs fine, no weird noise from the engine, shy of a slight groan and what sounds like a pulley may be hissing a bit. He then tells me "It's only when driving, mostly when accelerating."

So we get in. He pulls away from the curb and accellerates forward, and I hear a thumping from the rear, rhythmic, but only 4-6 thumps, sounds rotational. Imagine someone tapping on the rear/trunk pan in the car, 2x per second (so pretty spaced apart. It didn't sound close enough or high enough for LSD chatter, but I had him pull up to a stop sign and turn while accelerating. Sure enough, thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump, and stops when getting above 15. Had him stop at a stop sign, and repeat accelerating - no thump.

Needless to say, the symptoms are dead-on reproducible with typical chatter methods, i.e. accelerate in fwd/rev while turning, the wider the turn, the more the thumping. But the thumping sounds nothing at all like chatter I've had in any other car I've owned. Thing is, I've never owned a Jeep product in my life, and I avoid the f'n things like the plague, I'll never buy one.

Anyone more-familair with Jeep SUVs in the era of this one who can comment on it? It also has a warped rotor issue that rears its ugly head when braking at speed. I have some slip additive I can let him use, but may just change the fluid for him. I'm shocked to see this on a 45k mile vehicle though. And even more shocked at how it literally sounds like someone drumming/tapping on the rear floorboard with a rubber mallet. thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.

FWIW, I suspect it's the diff or a mount or something. It sounds like it's a straight up diff issue, other than the chatter being so low/deep/thumpy.

I had a 2011 Durango that shares a lot of the same equipment. Sounds stupid but pull the front sway bar links and see how loose they are. You can't just try moving them by hand because they'll seem tight but shake like a rattle when they're removed.

Try to listen to it outside the vehicle. Sounds like a tire issue. Loose wheels or hub? Bad bushing maybe, but why with rotation then?

I'll hafta give that a go. I'm going to see what maintenance history that came with it. As-is, need to replace rotors, I'm going to help him with that, and change rear diff to whatever fluid is recommended (I saw something about AP3048 fluid or something like that for this model w/LSD?) or maybe I'll just jam the Trans-X additive in there, and top it off with the Lucas I've got left, if compatible (I need to see what it takes normally).

I don't think they plan to keep it, but have concerns about the bumping and brake shimmy scaring off potential buyers. The mom only drove it driven 3.6k miles per year. So they're willing to drop a couple hundo into it if necessary.

    funny update.
was working in the yard yesterday and heard something heavy crashing in the woods. Was the neighbor that has the free range chickens. He was putting up a fence. One of those "orange snow fence" but in black. I pretty much left him & his wife to it other than a little feedback about property lines. I don't really like it, but it does everything I need. I offered him my mini-chain saw at one point when he was losing battle with a sapling.
We've gone from glaring at each other up/down the hill to courteous acknowledgement which is probably a good thing.
The wife actually offered me some eggs when they were almost done. Finally, she should have done that a year ago. I declined but it was nice.

Today I walk into the back yard & find two chickens in the yard. WTF? He did a good job with the fence so WTF?
Turns out they're from the other neighbor who is between me & free-range chicken neighbor.

Two new chickens to train to be scared of me. Amazing.

After I picked up the off-brand Tundra I met the previous owner buying a full size spare off C'list.
I asked him if he had any of the missing bits from the tire change tools foam block. He said he didn't take any of them & we tried to figure out what was missing. We realized it was only the key for the locking lug nuts. Then we realized the locking lug nuts were gone too - replaced with regular ones.

Those dealership employees always finding stuff. But really - who wanted the locking lug nuts?

Last Friday I ran out of hot water. Relit the pilot and carried on. Had to relight it again on Sunday. And Monday. Called the landlord and she said she'd have someone come out. Nothing on Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. It stopped relighting on Friday after a lukewarm shower. I called Monday and she had her dude there when I got home. He said thermocouple is out and he'd fix it in the AM. I got a call around 2 from the landlord saying they wanted to switch to electric and asked if I could hook it up. I said knock $50 off my rent and it's done. They're putting in a 40 gal as we speak.

I opened my panel and saw Bobby pins. Wtf.

    20240423_172044.jpg

Tightened down all my breakers and neutrals, then added a 30A 240v circuit. Of course I got the wrong breaker on my way home. I thought it was GE. Nope, ITE.

    20240423_175437.jpg

    Old water heater.

    20240423_175902.jpg

They're working on it now, so I still need to land it.

Fuck zinsco. This would've been a panel swap out.

Eh, took me 10 minutes to add. It's only for the month. I'd rather do it myself and know it's right than shoot her a high price and have a maintenance man for a trailerhood do it wrong.

Yeah, I’m month to month too. If I don’t pay for a month the bank performs this really cool act called default and then they do a foreclosure

No offense to you of course but I feel the same way about the sparkies at work, but if a light bulb is out, I’ll call them all day long.

my mechanic stopped by to check out my mini skid-steer. While we were talking he said he would work on the RV.
    ???
When I got it I asked him & he said no - too big.
Today, sure, it'll fit in the shop, we can work on it.
Then he checks it out a little, take a look under the hood & asks me if that spark plug is unplugged for a reason?

LOL, so that's why it was running a little rough last time I drove it.
No, there's no reason it's uplugged - probably unplugged by accident by a stray chicken looking for a new roost!

Ehhh not with these guys, Hahahah this breaker wouldn’t reset in the old building and I wasn’t going to pull the panel cover to see if any were spares, sparky did and moved one to the bad ones spot, Hahahah when he goes to turn it on he gets fully flat against the wall next to it and reaches his arm around to turn it on, like even he wasn’t sure what would happen!!!!! They leave the cover panels off inside pull disconnects, the list goes on. “Neutral is always white, but white is not always neutral” is a phrase I learned, and they wanted to argue with me about that too

True. That’s how I wired up the ceiling fan light combos in all of my bedrooms that just had 14-2 running from a single gang switch.

Yep switch legs, or 240v plugs and stuff with SO cord. In commercial refrigeration, the defrost clock has terminals N,X,3,4 and N is a line side traveler in a 240v switch setup, theyed always wire it with white and somewhere else tie it in to an actual neutral and wonder why shit be sparkin…..
