for some folks....that amount for tires is annual. just sayin'

and I'm with you on the Tundra.
    Since, way back, when I got my '96 4R, I wanted a S/C'd Toyota.
Magnuson was cutting edge at that time & Lord knows the 4R needed some umph.

well, I had to wait till '21 to have a s/c'd Toyota.
now, the Tundra is juuusssttt about perfect.
I am doing my best to keep it for 10yrs or so.

We drive a lot and spent north of $9k last year on fuel (I make a big chunk of that back at tax time because over 50% of my Tundra’s miles are for work). It would still take decades to make up the purchase price of a new Tesla, especially considering the extra cost to insure one.

Speaking of, what’s a guy in his early 40s pay to insure a Model Y these days? I’m reading mostly north of $2k.

As much as I like to think I only make the most rational financial decisions, I’m still really interested in seeing the updated Model Y. Seems they’re lowering prices on the current one to incentivize getting existing stockpiles sold so they can move on.

Idk, even with the tax credit (some states have additional incentives, including free charging setups, reduced rates, etc.) I think you could make up for that pretty quickly over the Tundra. The only maintenance you'll need to do is windshield wiper fluid, and tires at some point.

Insurance will vary largely depending on where you are located, driving record(s), multi-use discounts, if there are any teenage drivers, etc. A MY LR will be cheaper to insure than a MYP, that's for sure.

I would enter into a situation like @nobodyintexas where I keep driving the Tundra (again, 50%+ is for work), and my wife would move from a 13mpg LX570 to the Model Y. The LX cost us $24k cash, and we pay $300/yr to insure it. Fuel costs for 20k miles/yr are ~$4800 given a gas price of $3.15/gal.

Median annual insurance rates for a Model 3 are $2500. That adds $2200 annually that we did not pay before with the LX.

Paying $40k+ for a new EV that I have to insure at over half of what my LX's annual fuel costs are will ensure that I recover the money I'm not spending on fuel VERY slowly.

Whatever this forum told me to do

there is a special cost differential to apply if the wife drives the EV.

or, at least there is for me.

Ah, I see. Yes, your rates will be much higher I am sure lol. The maintenance costs on the LX probably are not a concern based on the amount of driving.

I'm in a very similar situation as you. Early 40's, my wife went from 13-14mpg in her lifted Sequoia to the LR Y.
I think it only pencils out if you are retiring a vehicle.
We paid $12k cash in 2016 for the '04 Sequoia so we're holding on to it, I split my time commuting in that and my Tundra.

No kids on our policy yet.

Even though the stopped making that car, it still seems fun. Also cheap to insure!

Ours went up $700 for 3 cars (full coverage) with adding a 16yo new driver
    Discounts:
    Multi-policy
    No accidents
    No tickets
    Kids 4.0 gpa

We are now down to two cars, and insurance dropped $250 I think (wife’s Highlander was a lease) probably will pick up a new Frontier when the right incentive comes across. We don’t need three cars as we both WFH and have access to her aunts car as needed too
