See @shifty's "Not Quite OP" post. Although I would like a Mod to allow him OP access to this one day.

Thanks, that's what I've been basing my search off of. But the bed rails on these are so wide. 66", from the same location on the opposite side of the bed. That's why I'm wondering if anyone has experience with slightly narrower shells. Seems like it'd fit, and that there's far more room for error side to side than front to back, as far as avoiding leaks.

    :D

I won't deny, I've seen trucks out there with narrow toppers, and I don't like the looks. I'm sure this one would fit, and all the glass is there, but I shouldn't be impatient...This one is affordable and has features I really want, but definitely didn't expect to get on the used market, so it's tempting.

RCLB utility shell at a pretty compelling price here, just northeast of Knoxville TN. These things cost 3x-4x more new.

As I search for toppers, one issue has come up, mostly due to my own lack of foresight. There's a topper I was about to drive 2 hrs to see, but I found out they don't have clamps. Neither do I. In the event that I might miss out on a good deal, is there a safe method you can think of, with hardware store materials, to safely secure a topper for a ~140 mile drive, just to get it home?

I've got clamps ordered now, since I've realized my mistake. Just curious if anyone has thoughts. Clamps will be here mid-next week, so it's not a big deal, really, but there's always a chance I'll need to scramble to get something before someone else does...

I’m always looking for something in a better paint condition than mine.

has anyone ever removed the side windows. I was looking and it’s about 8-10 screws. But there are no good YouTube videos. Mine are frameless, the ones online have rails and frames.

I want to try and do my window gasket seal and tint the window 5%. Looks easy if the window is off. Tint shop wanted 150$ per window

This. But I would use a metal plate between the clamp and fiberglass on the top of the rail, to spread out the force/load, so you don’t have the round part of the clamp punching thru the fiberglass. Doesn’t matter for the under-rail side as much, steel on steel.

Those are what my cap came with. I have a similar design in black’s got off the scAmazon, in a 6 pack. I’ve been meaning to swap out clamps just because they’re black, but the hardware on the clamps installed now is one size larger, which I prefer….

That was the one thought that came to my mind. Great, thanks.

And yes, that's funny, but those are the exact clamps I just ordered. Sorted by average customer review, they were up at the top, with "made in the USA" in the title, and one of the photos was a simple chart showing which model is compatible with what trucks. Good deal.

These are the ones @shifty` recommended to me. They are nice. Best advise, buy the clamps and keep them in your truck so that way you have them when the time comes.

Yep! Would have helped me, since I've been referencing this thread regularly when I look at toppers. But it worked out anyway.

It's amazing how many of these have busted out rear windows. Like almost all of the ones I'm seeing.

Because my truck is white, and realistically I can't afford to have the topper painted, but I'm really pretty particular about how things look, I'm only considering white, gray or black. There's a perfectly nice green one with busted out back window for $50 that was really tempting. But I know I wouldn't be happy with green on white.

Yeah I'll definitely keep the clamps with me. I regularly travel to a larger town (my town is ~5,000 people) just a couple hours north, and there's a decent chance something might come up there.

That's spendy for a style I don't fully love, but the fact it's paint matched and in (apparently, assuming he didn't bungle the roof drilling) pretty great shape, I could see someone dropping that much coin on it.

With how it looks like it marries up to the bed rails, I assume it'll be a nightmare to keep sealed.

I'd need to do a lot of research. I haven't had great results rattle-canning things in the past, and I've seen a few otherwise nice toppers for sale that are now two-tone due to fading/flaking rattle-can jobs.

What style do you love? I'm trying not to be too hasty, but have a pretty wide range of what I'd buy. Is it just aesthetics, or functional considerations that you don't like about that topper?

Any thoughts on CTC? Century. There's one on a junkyard Access Cab a couple hours down the highway from me (busted back window, of course) that I'm considering.

My absolute favorite is the Leer 100R, it's what I've got. I like it because it has a flange or skirt that conceals the factory plastic bedrail caps, and pretty much eliminates any risk of dripping on every side except the bulkhead/cab side. Which is the side that's tough to seal well on any cap.

I like the ARE like @FirstGenVol has too, though, with the welting around the base. And I've seen some really nice Century/CTC caps that, if I didn't know any better, were produced by ARE (but possibly not).

I think the biggest issue with caps for our trucks is, they either have a f'n dumb looking angle for the rear door (like the one I'm talking shit about just now), or they really don't fit over the rail, they sit on top of it. Like, you tool the time to make the angle against the cab look nice and uniform, and follow the body line nicely. Whey not do the same, or similar on the rear, to match the line of the tailgate end bed?

Gotcha. Yeah, with a used truck, looking for used (20-year old) toppers that aren't made anymore, I'm walking that line between just right, and good enough. I really am bothered by aesthetics I don't like. They get under my skin after a while...so I do need to be particular. I could live with that topper, the little bump out at the tailgate isn't ideal, but is something I could live with.

This one seems similar. No overlap on bed rails, and a not-perfectly-flush back end.

And here, zooming in on how the cap fits over the rail, it's kinda like this, where the cap comes down mid-rail, or onto the flat.. Caps should really marry up to the corner of the rail, at least cover the entire flat spot, so help with leak prevention. Or cary the line over the rail entirely.

This is how I see the cap below - and the overhang in the rear with that bizarre diagonal body line is just ... gimpy.

You can still get new caps. Leer still makes their 100 series for our trucks. I got quoted $2,400 for a new one. $2,800 with a few bells and whistles, IIRC.

I wouldn't be surprised if ARE still makes something too.

Actually as I look closer at the photo I just posted, it doesn't look like it matches up to the back of the cab all that well either, in addition to not matching the back end perfectly. I'm starting to be less excited about it...

Depending on your use, those pop out windows aren’t great. You can get anything out of them and they don’t provide a ton of ventilation for a pet or sleeping person.
Leer and snug top still make them. ARE makesthe DCU commercial cap that fits, too. ARE might make fiberglass models, but I’m not sure.
