Behind a Thin Green Line: The Memoir of an Undercover Game Warden Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 187 ratings

Behind a Thin Green Line is the tense story of a solo undercover investigation into a sociopathic ring of poachers that could have stepped out of the movie, Mad Max.

In Idaho’s remote Pahsimeroi Valley, Latham takes a shot at infiltrating this brutal gang of outlaws led by a man who lives to kill. This true story is an enlightening look into a collision of two grossly conflicting cultures. Poachers and game wardens.

Tony Latham grew up in Idaho listening to his grandmother reverently talking about her brother's adventures as an Idaho game warden. The seed was planted and in 1987 Tony joined the ranks as an Idaho game warden.

Tony conducted numerous long-term investigations using both traditional and undercover investigative techniques throughout Idaho in the war on wildlife criminals. He retired as Idaho's first regional investigator.

In retirement Tony continues to teach forensic classes to game wardens across North America as part of the highly rated Wildlife Field Forensics training cadre.

There are two videos on this page. The first is the book trailer and the second is undercover footage taken by the author and shows how ugly wildlife crime can be. I would not recommend you view it with children present.

When I offered Tony the position of Regional Investigator and suggested he “just go out and investigate stuff”, he did not need a multi-page document explaining what or how to do the job. Indeed the job description and duties had his fingerprints all over it. He had been putting in-depth and detailed cases against poachers since I met him in the late ’80’s, even while working his own patrol area in uniform. Tony is a natural and talented investigator. He is equally gifted as a writer and story teller. “Behind a Thin Green Line” is true story, no tall tale. There are as many stories of wanton wasteful destruction and disregard for our wildlife as there are patrol areas. The behaviors and actions detailed in “Behind the Thin Green Line” are exactly why there was a need for people like Tony and other Regional Investigators, working closely, hand in hand with local uniformed Game Wardens.

While reading his story, the hair on the back of my neck stood up as he described the smells, looks, behaviors, threats, actions and their results as he stood among the poacher’s gang. If you ever wondered what it was like to live totally insecure, precariously on edge and alone, knowing your safety net was hours or days away, read this and Tony’s other memoir.

I was equally proud as the story concludes when a team of Idaho’s game wardens came together. Uniform and not, game wardens, and the forensic scientists who support them are emotionally tied to the resource they protect. They care about each individual critter and the right for hunters to legally and ethically pursue wild game for the table. Make no mistake, the poachers in this story are not hunters, but they do threaten hunting and our wildlife resources.

Read Tony’s story and then ask yourself what side of the “green line” do you stand?

The book was well written. The criminal subjects are not likeable, while made it harder for me to read through the book.

This memoir tells a very important true story about how a game warden in Eastern Idaho infiltrated a group of serial poachers in order to prosecute serious hunting violations. The story is very well written and filled with fascinating details and descriptions of the events it chronicles. The story is engaging and very suspenseful and there are times where you fear for the author getting out alive. The Pahsimori range in Idaho is one of the most beautiful and remote areas anywhere and it is a shame that such events as the author describes not uncommon. Maybe more public awareness of the seriousness nature of these types of wildlife crimes will bring a reduction of their occurrence.

There were times when I forgot I was reading a True story and thought I was reading a suspense novel. I had to remind myself that the author survives. I have hunted, and have been drilled in hunter safety (never ride in a vehicle with a rifle pointed upward! Or a chamber loaded! - love how Tony Latham subtly points out that faux pas of the poachers, while he, himself, rides with the barrel of his rifle pointed earthward). The description of the hunting camp, the attitudes of the poachers, and the description of the country is from someone who is both an observer and a participant. I could smell the sagebrush. I could see the gut piles. My husband and I are avid hunters (now retired to using cameras because of the abuses we have seen). Tony Latham never makes me feel as if he is pointing at a legitimate, honest, hunter. It's all about the incredible disrespect of nature and life.
The book is dedicated to Bill Pogue and Conley Elms, Idaho Game Wardens who were executed in the line of duty. Bill Pogue was a family friend. His family continues to be my friends. This is a story that gives some insight into how - and why - Bill and Conley were where they were when they were murdered in the Owyhee country. You find yourself cheering for Tony and hoping he comes out alive (even though he wrote the book, and you know he did).
It is also sobering at how lax the sentences are for the game violations. We cannot accept that.

The mid-spelled words, grammar and punctuation will interrupt the flow of your reading. Muddle through, it is a great story and a subject that requires further investigation

This story was a very enjoyable read. From the beginning to end you understand the love the writer has for the outdoors he served. At times it felt like descriptions and memories were cut short for the writing but overall a great ride along with a fantastic warden.

Several authors use the profession of Game Wardens as the character in their fictional stories. Mr. Latham has done that with two of his previous novels. His fiction and those of others are a good read. One can sit back and enjoy the adventure. 'Behind a Thin Green Line' is different. In this memoir, the reader crawls into the cab beside Mr. Latham, buckles up and lives the frightening reality of a Game Warden's chosen profession. The danger and intrigue is at a hight level on every page. The fact that the author is alive to tell his story is a tribute to his professionalism. As an author, he makes the situations and criminals he contends with very real. His understanding of his profession and the insight he offers are an eye opener. Without complaining about a thankless job, he describes the actions of an undercover officer. The reader comes to realize that the men and women in that profession are in the field without backup, facing armed hunters. Many of those hunters are careful and honest. Then there are the others. It is necessary for the individual officer to make that distinction quickly and react responsibly. Like Mr. Latham, those dedicated professionals are deserving of the greatest respect. For those that have not read his previous three books, I would highly recommend them. Two are fiction and one is another memoir. A fifth book relates to the forensic evidence gained from a detailed examination of spent shell casings.
